Fourth Annual Nebraska Star Party
August 2-9, 1997
Contests
NAME-THAT-OBJECT
Name-That-Object has become an annual event of The Nebraska Star Party. “Name-That-Object” will be conducted
in the meeting room on Friday. All registered NSP attendees are welcome to participate. The event consists of a
number of slides of astronomical objects which will be displayed on the screen. Participants will have roughly 20-30
seconds to identify each object. No points are deducted for incorrect answers. The person with the most correct
answers will receive an award, however everybody wins in “Name-That-Object”, because it’s fun and challenging. In
case of a tie, there will be a play-off.
ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY
Awards will be given for the finest Photographs & CCD images in the following five categories:
I. SOLAR SYSTEM: Planets, moon, sun & comets
II. DEEP SKY: Medium to high power deep-sky objects and fields
III. 1x: Terrestrial, aurora, star trails, 1x star fields, etc.
IV. CCD: CCD images (must be printed)
V. NSP4: Any photo taken from August 1-7, 1997 at Merritt Reservoir
DETAILS:
- Only photos that were taken by NSP attendees and were not submitted to previous NSP photo contests are
eligible.
- Entries for categories I-IV need not be taken at NSP. Category V entries must be taken at NSP4. Developing is
available in Valentine, NE.
- Photographs may be entered by submitting them with an entry form, available at the registration desk, no later
than 3:00pm Thursday August 7, 1997.
- Information needed for the entry form includes: Date & location taken, telescope aperture or lens focal length,
f-ratio, film speed & exposure time.
- Each registered NSP attendee may submit up to two entries per category. If desired, photos may be grouped and
submitted as one entry.
- Each photo must be mounted or framed. Please, no loose photographs. CCD images must be printed.
- Entries will be assigned an entry number and will be displayed at the high school auditorium on Friday morning.
A ballot box will be set up and each NSP attendee may cast a ballot on Friday for his or her choice of winners in
each category. Winners will be selected based on the most votes and awards will be presented to the winner of
each category at the meeting room on Friday evening.
TELESCOPE MAKING
Amateur Telescope Making awards will be given for winners in the following categories:
I. BEST DESIGN
II. FINEST WORKMANSHIP
III. MOST INNOVATIVE DESIGN (including astronomical accessories)
DETAILS:
- Only entries designed and/or built by registered NSP attendees are eligible.
- Items may be entered in 1, 2 or all 3 categories by checking the appropriate boxes on the entry form.
- There is no limit to the number of entries.
- Entry forms, available at the registration desk, must be submitted no later than 3:00pm Thursday August 7, 1997.
At that time, entries will be assigned an entry number and given a card to display on the telescope.
- All entries must be set up at the Snake Campground observing area for judging by 7:00 pm Thursday.
Entries not in the designated area will not be judged.
- Winners will be selected by the judging committee and awards will be presented at the meeting room on Friday
evening.
THE GREAT NSP DEEP SKY CHALLENGE
The Great NSP Deep Sky Challenge is designed to test your observing skills. Official rules, including lists of objects
and observing forms, may be obtained at the registration table. Completed forms should be turned in at the registration
table no later than 3:00 pm on Friday 8/8. Participants successfully completing the “challenge” will receive awards at
the meeting room on Friday evening. Thanks to Dave Hamilton for compiling this year’s challenge!
BIGGEST FISH AWARD
An award will be given to the biggest fish (by weight) caught by NSP attendees. Fish should be weighed at the Merritt
Resort Trading Post.
